How to use the Character Counter
It could not be simpler. Click the big text box above and start typing — or paste anything you have copied from somewhere else. Every number on the page updates the instant you type. Nothing is saved or sent anywhere; the counting happens right in your browser, so your text stays private.
When you are done, the Clear button wipes the box clean so you can start the next piece of text. That is genuinely all there is to it.
What the numbers mean
Characters counts every letter, space and punctuation mark — this is the number most social platforms care about. Characters (no spaces) is handy for assignments or freelance work where spaces do not count toward the total. Words is what essays, articles and resumes are measured in. Sentences and paragraphs help you see the shape of your writing at a glance — if a paragraph runs to twenty lines, it probably wants splitting. Reading time is a rough estimate at average reading speed, useful before you publish a caption or a bio that people will actually read.
Why character limits matter on social media
Every platform draws its lines in a different place, and crossing them silently cuts your text off. An Instagram bio stops at 150 characters — anything longer simply does not appear. TikTok gives you only 80 characters for a bio, which is why the best TikTok bios read like headlines. X still holds posts to 280 characters, WhatsApp statuses to 700, and Threads to 500.
The live bars above do the worrying for you. Type your draft once and watch each bar fill up — green-blue means you are safe, orange means you are close, and pink-red means you have gone over and need to trim. It beats posting, noticing the cut-off, and rewriting.
Character Count vs Word Count
Understanding the difference between characters and words will make writing much easier. Character count is required when using social media platforms as they will have a character limit. For example, tweets, bios and headlines require you to be within a certain number of characters (including spaces). Whereas, word count is more important when writing essays, articles, and assignments as they will usually specify a word limit. Short social media posts may be short in word count but include many characters due to longer words. Long articles may be longer in word count but have shorter average word length. Using this tool will allow you to see both character and word count at once. If the platform you are using is using character count then simply take note of this number. If your teacher or editor specified a word count then take note of this.
How to Write Under a Limit
Being able to write under a limit takes some practice. You can make it easier by doing the following: Firstly, remove any unnecessary words from your text. Words such as very, really and just do not add any meaning. Secondly, make phrases shorter. Finally, check that you are not using too many emojis or hashtags. As they will count as characters on social media platforms. Once you have shortened your text, read it out loud. If it still flows well and contains the key message then you have done it! If the meaning has changed slightly, add a couple of words back in and shorten somewhere else. By counting as you type, you will be able to easily shorten sentences. This is because you will not feel like you are changing your text completely as you will only be making small changes. The counter will be live so you will be able to see your characters/words increase.
Why Students and Writers Use a Character Counter
Students often use character counters. When completing application forms, scholarship essays and exam answers there is often a strict character limit. Going over the limit could result in being rejected or scoring less. Writers use character counters to help create headlines, meta descriptions and product descriptions. Going over the limit by a few characters can cause issues with your layout or cut off in search results. Even subject lines in emails can benefit from using a character counter. Long subject lines will be cut off on mobile devices. A character counter will help you plan how much space you actually have for your idea and will help you tailor your message.
FAQs
Is this character counter free?
Yes — completely free, no sign-up, no limits on how much text you check.
Does my text get saved or uploaded?
No. All counting happens in your browser on your own device. Your text never leaves the page.
What is the difference between characters and characters without spaces?
“Characters” counts everything including spaces; “characters without spaces” skips them. Some schools and clients count one way, some the other — now you have both.
Why does my word count look wrong?
Words are split on spaces, so hyphenated terms and numbers each count as one word. For social bios and captions that is exactly how the platforms count too.
Can I check an Instagram bio here?
Yes — type your bio draft and watch the Instagram bio bar (150 characters). Keep a little headroom so emojis and line breaks do not push you over.
Does it work on mobile?
Yes. The counter is a simple web page, so it works in any modern phone browser — type or paste and the numbers update as you go.
Are spaces counted?
In most cases yes, spaces will be included in the character count. This tool includes spaces in the count. However, if the platform you are using does not include spaces then the character counter on the platform will be the final say. However, spaces will be included almost everywhere.
Can I include emojis and line breaks?
Yes, this tool will include emojis and line breaks in the character count. Most social media platforms will include them. Some platforms will count specific emojis as 2 characters so it is best to leave a little bit of room if you are strict with your character limit.
